Caps, Crowns & Flashing in Nashville, Tennessee

The three places water actually gets in, repaired or replaced before it reaches the firebox.

Nashville's Chimney Sweep connects homeowners across Middle Tennessee with licensed, insured chimney sweeps for caps, crowns & flashing. Estimates are free and written, the price is agreed before work starts, and the workmanship is backed in writing.

What the job usually involves

Every property is different, which is why the estimate comes after somebody has actually looked at it rather than before. What does not change is the process: assess, explain the options in plain language, put the scope and price in writing, then do the work to that scope.

Why homeowners call

The reasons people get in touch.

  • Smoke comes back into the room
  • Sharp smell from the fireplace
  • Birds or animals in the chimney
  • Water staining round the hearth
  • Cracked or missing chimney crown
  • Damper stuck or will not seal

What is included

What caps, crowns & flashing covers.

  • Stainless or copper cap sized and fitted
  • Spark arrestor mesh where the appliance needs it
  • Crown repaired or recast in proper crown mix
  • Flashing resealed or replaced where it has failed
  • Counter-flashing let into the mortar joint, not surface-sealed
  • Waterproofing applied to the stack where appropriate
  • All debris removed from the roof and gutters
  • Photographs from the roof, since you cannot see it

Caps, Crowns & Flashing, in practice

Nearly every chimney problem that is not creosote is water. The cap, the crown and the flashing are the three things keeping it out, and they fail in that order of cost.

A crown is not a mortar wash. It should be a purpose-mixed concrete slab with a drip edge that throws water clear of the brick. A crown troweled out of leftover mortar cracks within a couple of Middle Tennessee winters, and every crack takes water straight into the stack.

Flashing has to be let into the mortar joint. Surface-sealed flashing — a bead of caulk against brick — looks the same on the day and fails within a year or two, and it is the single most common bodge we find.

A cap is the cheapest part on the whole chimney and prevents the most expensive damage. Rain, birds, squirrels and downdraught all stop at the cap.
